Social Security Number Identity Theft is perhaps the most misunderstood of identity theft. Some people have said, “I wish someone would steal my identity – My credit is messed up anyway, good luck!”. Please be careful of what you wish for. In the United States almost everything you do is tied to your social security number, when a thief gets this information, be it a stolen wallet or hacked database they can do almost anything to you and your name. Get copies of your credit reports, get employment, change your name, reroute credit, get loans, buy a house, a business, and rack up thousands of dollars in bills for yours

truly to pay. Many illegal immigrants have gotten employment, opened business, or applied for federal assistance with someone else’s number. While on the surface what difference dose it make? If they’re employed under your name, so what, then they’re also paying taxes and social security – right? Maybe so, but there may also be two or more refunds requested. When the IRS throws up a red flag, accuses you, the second person to file, of fraud or may charge you for not claiming all your income. When the business makes money, IRS looks at you for the taxes. Who would be accused of ripping off customers, in a crooked operation or as the owners of a child porn site? Who will the police come looking for? Now try proving its not you. What are you going to do? Show your drivers license and social security card? On the flip side, some of these illegal immigrants used the number of a street bum. The bum may have been on social security disability or other assistance. Now employment is being shown and his or her disability payments are now stopped. To make matters worst some states use, or have used ones social security numbers as their drivers license number. Social security is a trillion dollars in debt, yet are bringing in over a $billion a week from illegal immigrants working, are they really ready to stop identity theft? (Report 12) If you ever loose your wallet, be sure to keep a close watch on your credit reports, watch for crimes and address changes in your name, even if the wallet is returned. Don’t carry your social security number with you, or place it on checks or use it as a password.
