Email Fraud - Many thieves use email fraud scams to steal your personal information. A lot of email fraud is so obvious, it’s almost a joke. Most email fraud is actually email phishing. Phishing is a form of email scams that lure you to believe your information has been stolen. You won the lottery! Your account has been compromised! You can apply for the job or anything else to fish for your personal information. Most email phishing will actually have logos and links to sites that look real. Email phishing and other email scams almost always ask you to click on a link, or enter your banks password. Most email scams prey on our human nature of need and greed. Never order or dispute anything from the email (don’t even call phone numbers in the email). Instead if you think it is real open a new browser window and go directly to the site you know to be real (or call the phone number on your statement or card, not that which is in an email scam). (See Report 29). There are four things you can do with email phishing and scams 1.) DELETE IT - therefore in essence you do nothing. 2.) BLOCK IT - You’ll at least stop future email to your in box, (from at least one of the scammers email addresses) though this does nothing to stop them from ripping off someone else. 3.) For regular spam FORWARD IT to: spam@uce.gov (This is the government spam processing address. But they only go after the most reported - So if you and a 1000 others sent spam from the same place they may go after them.) For PHISHING EMAIL (Banks, credit card company or government offices named in the email scam) FORWARD IT AS AN ATTACHMENT TO: phishing-report@us-cert.gov To report fraud and other email phishing see NCSD, and US-CERT. 4.) HAVE FUN WITH IT - Go to 419eater for more details. Actually I’d do all four but in the reverse order.
