You must follow ALL the steps in this guide to start the recovery / restoration process, you will have to repeat the steps for each case of, or account affected by identity theft. For many, the process may take months or even years. You can also call this number to file a complaint with FTC. When you order the guide plan on 3-4 weeks before you receive it. If you miss some of the vital steps in this guide, you can have re-occurring identity theft situations for years to come. An important note: The FTC handles Identity Theft Prevention, and education to the general public. While calling them to report identity theft, FTC does not give total restoration of your identity, it is only the starting place to report it. They will give you basic restoration information, and a case number, and they use your information to help keep a tally of reported identity theft cases. But you still have to do the work. Also this information only helps to restore your financial identity, it does not cover the other four types of id theft. Taxpayer Advocate Service - When an identity thief uses your identity you can be charged and jailed for tax fraud, and other crimes committed by the identity thief. If someone works under your name you can be charged with tax fraud, for not claiming the income. On the other hand if the identity thief files for a tax refund, as well as you - you can be charged with tax fraud. (See report 10) Keep well documented records of all your restoration events.
