Security Freezes - Many states allow consumers to place security freezes on their credit report. Some see them as a fix all to the identity theft problem. While on the surface a freeze on your credit report seams like a good idea, the founders of this site see many flaws in their use. One of the major things is they do not cover all types of id theft, such as synthetic or drivers license identity theft. With some freezes thieves have gotten and changed the victims passwords, and then the real victim couldn’t even track the address’s the thief was using. The same holds true if you loose or forget your password - they do not automatically send your forgotten password (even if it's been years since you accessed your account). Not to mention the fees ($10 -$20 every time) to place, temporarily lift, or remove the freeze all together. These are just a few of the problems we see with a freeze. To see if your state allows a freeze visit: Financial Privacy Now. With some types of id theft phone id theft, data breaches, (see report 29), debit card fraud, etc., many companies contact you when multiple cards are used, cards used in areas you've never been, etc. When you have a freeze on your credit reports these and regular monitoring companies can not monitor or contact you. )
Shred Personal Information - From pre-approved credit offers, utilities bills, check stubs, bank statements, etc., before discarding, often these items are used for different types of id theft. All items that have personal information on them should be shredded before tossing in the trash, because many of these items are taken at different points of trash disposal. Then new accounts are opened at new address’s in your name. Don’t use a strip shredder, use a cross cut or better shredder, as there have been cases where the police have found strips taped to the wall of a crooks home. Also shred or destroy CD’s, hard drives and other multi media before discarding.
