How do identity thieves get your information?

There is an unlimited number of ways thieves get your information, the most common is stealing your mail and stealing your trash, (click photo to left). Many of these thieves will apply for new credit in your name within weeks. Some thieves will even use special skimmers to make copies of your credit cards, or steal information from your wallet and immediately start stealing money from your accounts, (click on the two photos below). While shredding your personal information and using a PO box for mail, may help deter identity theft, it won’t stop it. Further more this only slows credit card or financial identity theft. What about criminal, medical, drivers licence, or social security identity theft? Some thieves

will become you! They will own homes, have bills, and credit in your name. Many will even work or open business’s under your name and social security number. Some of theses thieves will even pay the bills for a while.
The big question is how will you find out you’re a victim of identity theft? Most find out when they get calls from collection agencies, their creditors, or when the police or other federal agency

comes knocking on the door. According to the FTC, 10 million people are identity theft victims each year, (27,000 a day). While law enforcement is doing all they can to catch these thieves, they don't have the man power to stop it, less then 5% of the identity thieves will be caught, and most victims will have their identity stolen more then once. We have provided many tips as to what you can do to prevent identity theft, but this only covers information that you control.
